GPS for Dogs
Gps is a very popular technology used today. Gps can be used to track vehicles, people and even dogs! There are many options to choose from when selecting a GPS unit for a dog so it is important to be informed before purchasing
GPS for Dogs
The worst thing that we as a dog loving family went through was when our pet Pekingese found the yard gate open and went off on a solo adventure and could not find his way back. I’ll never forget the pain we went through, and my youngest cried himself to sleep for days. He did find his way back eventually after two weeks, and he was bedraggled and emaciated. We never did get to know where he went and how he found his way back, but one thing is for sure, we never want to go through that experience again.
That was a long time ago; we did not have technology to help us. Now we do in the form of GPS or Global Positioning Satellite. A GPS tracking system can, with the help of satellites help you to pinpoint the exact location of the object you are looking for, in this case your pet dog. You can get a GPS microchip installed in your pet. Don’t worry, it is not painful and it won’t cost much. Besides it is a onetime expense and lasts twenty-five years. You won’t need to constantly update it or maintain the equipment.
The microchip sends radio frequency waves, and does not need batteries. The microchip will be configured to have coded information like your name, your pet’s name, his breed, color etc. This can work as the identification of your pet. But it will not help track your pet. These chips are useful if some body finds your dog. By scanning the microchip they will instantly know exactly who the dog belongs to and can contact you.
In order to track exactly where your dog is you would need a GPS enabled dog collar. The collar will be programmed to let you know when the dog has run off from the assigned boundary that you consider safe. The device will them send you a text message, or an email or both. You will be told where the dog is and directions on how to get to him. The same message is sent to the company that is monitoring the GPS device and their recovery team who will guide you and assist you. The GPS Locator has another useful feature. If someone else has found your dog, the collar has a rescue button that the person can push to help locate the dog.
This device does not need complicated set ups. It is compact and very light and works on a removable and rechargeable battery. It is water resistant and so it won’t spoil in the rain. It comes equipped with a bright LED beacon you can see from a distance and a rescue button. The collar comes with company tag identification and the recovery team assistance service.
This is a wonderful development and is an excellent way to keep track of our fur babies. Once you have found your pet, the microchip can help identify it and verify that you are the owner.
Even though this is much more convenient and is a useful device, it is much better to ensure that the dog does not manage to run out on the road. It is simply not safe with all the traffic. It is far better to keep them home and safe.
When looking for a gps system for your dog you should look for the following.
Make sure the dogs gps collar is not to big - If your dog does not feel comfortable with the gps collar on he may find a way to take it off!
How long will the battery last on the dogs gps? - Battery life is important. Most batteries last between 2 - 10 days between recharges. This means that the dog gps collar would be perfect when going on a trip or taking the dog to a new area, however not as convenient for the dog to wear all the time!
What extra fees come with the dog gps tracking system - Some companies will charge a monthly fee or extra fees to locate your dog.
How accurate is the Dog gps tracking? - Some systems are more accurate than others
Can I track the dog myself? - Some companies allow you to use your dog gps system with your phone or any computer with an internet connection.
I hope you enjoyed this article about dog gps tracking systems. I am currently talking with a person who will offer dog gps in Canada. He has shown me a few models of collars and is just working on getting his site up!

Insurance For Dogs
In this article I have compiled some dog insurance statistics so you can weigh out the pros and cons of getting insurance for your dog.
Should I get Insurance for my Dog?
According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, an average of $785 in vet bills was spent last year by dog owners. Per data collected from the American Animal Hospital Association and Consumer Reports, dog owners are looking at the following in medical costs for their dogs:
Average cost of Vet bills for a dog
Procedure | Average Cost (National) |
Repair a broken limb | $350 |
Sew a torn knee ligament | $383 |
Gastrotomy (to retrieve swallowed object) | $274 |
X-rays | $58 for the first, $36 for each additional |
Anesthesia (per half hour) | $56 |
Preanesthetic sedation | $23 |
Preanesthetic exam | $28 |
Anesthetic monitoring | $19 |
Procedures for Dogs | Average Cost (National) |
Adult canine wellness visit | $145.60 |
Canine spay | $147.90 to $194.60 (depending on weight of dog) |
Canine neuter | $127.70 to $156.10 (depending on weight of dog) |
For those that have done any amount of research into what it costs to own a dog, they should not be too surprised by the astronomical costs of medically treating their dog. All those looking to purchase or rescue a dog, before even considering what type of dog it is you want, you must consider the cost of owning a dog throughout its lifetime. While the worst may never happen, you can only ensure to be as prepared as possible for the unexpected.
To offset some of the medical costs when owning a dog, insurance for dogs is an option you can turn to; dog insurance could very well save you money in the long run. These companies operate in a very similar way to health insurance for humans, complete “with deductibles, co-payments, annual premiums, and limitations for pre-existing conditions.” If you opt for insurance for your dog, it is essential that you do the research so as to be as well informed as possible when choosing which company you will entrust your dogs health with. There are a considerable number of options to choose from and it can all be overwhelming and bewildering when trying to fully grasp all the information. Every premium varies according to a number of criteria including your dogs age, pedigree and even location.
Insurance for dogs is primarily designed to protect you and your dog against the unexpected, like illness and accidents. Generally, routine care of your dog (vaccinations, regular vet visits) is not covered but there are companies out there who do.
How to choose dog insurance plan
There are any number of monthly plans with various levels of coverage; what you pay monthly depends on the plan you choose; if you are going for full coverage which includes (at some companies) unlimited for accidents, unlimited coverage per condition per year, $600 dental per year and $360 special category/per year, you can then select the deductible you want to pay and then based on that, your monthly payout will then be calculated (a $400 deductible for the unlimited plan above will cost approximately $82.85 per month). If you choose to go with a higher deductible, your monthly payments will be lower.
How to choose what dog insurance is right
Essentially, there are four fairly simple steps to purchasing insurance for your dog, after you have chosen which company to go with: choose the coverage you want, waiting period (time between purchase of insurance to time coverage becomes effective), making a claim (see your vet as usual, pay the bill and then ensure your vet fills out and signs a claim form), receipt of your claim cheque. In addition, if you have more than one dog, some insurance companies will allow you to both customize and choose a different plan per dog in your household.
Example of How Dog Insurance Works
Below is an example of what one can expect in terms of payout from a pet [dog] insurance company. Again, every company is different, so you must do your homework (do watch out for plans that have exclusions on things like pre-existing and hereditary conditions – like hip dysplasia).
Invoice
$375 Hospitalization (3 day stay in an emergency facility)
$125 Exam
$1200 Treatment/Diagnostics
$60 Recheck with regular vet
Total invoice = $1,760
Invoice $1,760 (initial treatment)
$1,760
-$352 (20% Co-insurance)
= $1,408 (Sub-total)
-$100 (Deductible)
= $1,308 (Insurance Reimbursement)
Dog Insurance cost
You must keep in mind that over the entire life span of your dog, it is possible that you could pay out more in total expenses than what you recoup in premiums and other costs, however, there really is no price you can put on your dog, particularly for the vast majority that love them like their own child. In the end, you have to ask yourself if insurance for your dog is really worth the investment. If your dog is a member of the family and for you, there is no price too high to save them from what may end up being just routine surgery, then you have already answered that question. After all having dog insurance may just help save your dogs life when you can not afford to.
Plentyofpuppies strongly recommends Embrace Pet Insurance but encourages dog owners to look around at other dog insurance companies before making a decision.

With people becoming more and more aware of the benefits of eating healthy and living right, it was only natural that people should also start ensuring that they fed the right kind of food to their pets too. It was something that was bound to happen, we are getting wiser and more aware that we need the best kind of nourishment for ourselves and our pets too. Just like it is safer for us to avoid preservatives and sub-standard additives in our foods, the same way it is far safer for dogs too.
By feeding our loved pets healthy homemade dog biscuits we can ensure that they are being fed safe and healthy food. We can ensure that they are eating fresh, organic and preservative free dog biscuits. Did you know that the preservatives found in store bought dog biscuits can actually make your dog aggressive besides harming its health? Dogs fed with homemade food and biscuits eat well balanced meals, their coats are shiny, they are happy and healthy and they will maintain better weight.
Obesity is a huge problem not only for humans but for dogs as well. Commercial dog food is high in fats and sugars. The healthy option is to give your dog homemade biscuits and food. Healthy and organic homemade dog foods can help keep your dogs free of fleas and ticks, and not as prone to ear and skin infections. Healthy homemade dog biscuits is a holistic way of treating dogs. Your visits to the vet will be infrequent, bringing your pet expense drastically down.
My son wanted to eat everything our pets would eat, and this really worried me. So I started making dog biscuits at home. There are surprisingly easy to make recipes on the internet. One recipe which I use is given below:
Healhty Dog Biscuit Recipe
Take two cups of whole wheat flour and mix in ½ cup or corn meal or oat meal.
Add 1 teaspoon of salt (you can use sea salt or iodized)
add small bits of liver
1 tablespoons of vegetable oil
1 cup of smooth peanut butter.
Mix in 2 large eggs and ¼ cup of beef or chicken broth. First mix in all the dry ingredients, then add oil and peanut butter, most of the egg (keep a bit aside). If you find the dough dry, add a bit more of the broth. Let the dough rest for at least an hour. Roll it out till it is about ½ inch thick, cut into biscuit shapes. If you have a big dog, cut larger biscuits. Glaze with the remaining egg mixture and bake in an oven for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Turn off the oven and let the biscuits sit there to dry out some more. Remove after an hour and store in an air tight container or a plastic bag. Dogs love this, and even though I hate to admit it, so does my son!

Merrick Dog Food Review
Merrick dog food is a widely popular dog food which is synonymous with good quality. It has been widely reviewed and is extremely popular. The product strength is that it is focused on health, and the ingredients used are human-grade. They use meats, fruits and dehydrated vegetables giving the pet a well balanced meal. Merrick Dog food is an example of Holistic dog food.
Merrick Pet Care Inc is a family owned business, which has about 18 years of experience in manufacturing pet food. Merrick pet care is based in Amarillo, Texas. They manufacture all their dog foods in their own plant, and carry out extensive in-house tests before the dog food is sent out into the market.
Merrick dog food has a wide variety of dog food and has a long list of satisfied customers who have given their products rave reviews. Their strength is their quality. The food is human grade dog food, completely free of hormones and antibiotics. They are very careful in their testing, add not preservatives or by products. Satisfied pet owners have noticed that their dogs are more active, have softer and healthier coats and are free of ailments.
The content list on Merrick Dog Food states that they use organic chicken and the only things that are added are probiotics, chelated minerals and Omega fatty acids. No wonder the dogs are happier and healthier when fed such food.
Given below is an analysis of some of the dog food manufactured by Merrick
Product: Puppy Plate
This is dry kibble, moister than adult dog food, but it is hard enough to make the puppy work his jaws and feel satisfied with it. It has more than 30% protein, which makes it high energy food for your puppy. It has vitamins, garlic, chicory root, amino acids that are good for health. However, it also has guar gum, sodium, potassium chloride etc which are harmful and hard to digest.
Product: Before Grain
This is a wet, meat only dog food, perfect for those who want an all natural, all meat and grain free food to their pets. All it has is buffalo and water. It can be steep on the pocket so most pet owners end up mixing Before Grain with kibble or with home made rice/wheat and vegetables. Pure meat is indulgence and not exactly a balanced diet. If you want to switch your pet on solely this diet, you need to consult your vet first.
Product: Senior MedleyThis is a dry kibble, low on protein and high on fiber, perfect for senior dogs with worn out teeth. The only problem this product has is that it is dry and can be a challenge for senior dogs. If you wet the kibble with water or add some other wet food to this, it can help your pet. Another product that you can use for elderly dogs is the canned senior’s blend which is wet, has lower protein but elderly dogs seem to find it much easier to eat.
Some other Merrick Dog foods are the Before Grain Salmon and the Before Grain Trout which are wonderful for the pets. If you have a fussy pet, you could try mixing one of the Before Grain products with regular chow and watch the difference.

What is Holistic dog food?
I am sure you have heard this term used interchangebly with natural dog food, natural dog food, organic dog food and so on. But what exactly is Holistic dog food and why is it good for you and your dog?
What is Holistic dog food?
Holistic means - concerning with the WHOLE not just the parts.
This means with Holistic dog food that the food will not just fill the dog up, but be nutritious and good for the whole body and spirit! Holistic dog food should be nutritious, organic and very healthy for your dog
Personally I think Holistic dog food is just a term thrown around loosely, sort of a buzz word for dog food. It is a good idea to look for natural dog food though as there are many benefits. You can check out my article on the top 5 dry dog foods if you are looking for some good dry dog food.
Pet Promise Dog Food Review
There is a rather unique story behind the creation of Pet Promise Dog Food; the three men who started the brand (and product), initially set out on a mission to help struggling U.S. farmers and ranchers who were already committed to the fair and humane treatment of animals in addition to ensuring quality and sustainable standards for animals. What resulted, was an idea to create a pet food made up of totally naturally products which included proteins only coming from pure sources. Along the journey to help support these farmers and ranchers, they ended up with Pet Promise Dog Food. Per the Pet Promise mission, they “only buy source-verified, beef, bison and chicken from ranchers who guarantee us meat and poultry that's raised without added hormones and antibiotics. Our meat and poultry is not blended with ingredients that do not meet our stringent standards of purity.”
When you buy Pet Promise Dog Food you are assured you will be serving your dog a food that has no animal by-products (like those not consumed by humans – spleens, brains, etc.), no growth hormones (used to increase unnatural growth of farm animals), no rendered meats (a process whereby fat is separated from protein), no factory-farm meat or chicken (this in an effort to support local and regional farmers), and no colors, additives, or preservatives.
As is true for the human body, naturally consumed food products are a much healthier and safer choice; the same holds true even when it comes to what you feed your dog. For those dog owners looking for a far superior alternative to what can be purchased in the general market place, Pet Promise Dog Food is literally everything it promises to be – you won't be disappointed if you give this to your dog at their next meal. If still not convinced and in an effort to cut costs, keep in mind that in generic brands of dog food (if this is what you opt for), the ingredients alone can vary from package to package depending on which nutrient sources were available at the time the food was manufactured. Many may be surprised to learn that through the outcome of various feeding trials, it has been discovered that many generic dog foods were found to have lower digestibility due to to the inclusion of indigestible fibers in the product. If you wouldn't eat that, why would you give it to your dog?
As a society, most have become much more health conscious and as is the case, know that in order to boost one's energy you need to tap into the fab five foods: fiber, whole grains, protein and antioxidants; all of these can be found in Pet Promise Dog Food thus ensuring your dog will have healthy skin, a softer and more vibrant coat, and overall better health.
You can learn more about Pet Promise Dog food by visiting their site or through various other links. Thanks for reading!

Life's Abundance Dog Food Review
Life's Abundance Dog Food
With the vast array of commercial dog foods on the market, it is difficult for even the most seasoned dog owner to choose just the right one for their beloved pet. One has the option of going with a generic dog food that doesn't carry a brand name, private-label foods which usually carry the name of the store in which they are sold, popular dog foods or premium foods (which are generally the most expensive).Unlike humans, dogs have far fewer taste buds than we do (dogs have about 2,000 taste buds compared to our 12,000). As is the case, a dogs palette is relatively insensitive. Amazingly enough, a dog can tell the difference between sweetness, sourness, saltiness, and bitterness; more accurately, their sense of taste can be distinguished as pleasant, unpleasant, and indifferent. As any dog owner knows, your pooch will show a preference for certain foods – like us, they definitely have their likes and dislikes.
Life's Abundance Dog Food is one of the products on the market that uses all natural ingredients. They advertise the fact that their brand of food is “carefully chosen to work with all the others to provide your dog with a wholesome, highly-nutritious and perfectly-balanced meal every day.” Life's Abundance is a veterinary formulated diet with specifically selected ingredients that they “fast”-cook at a low temperature in order to preserve the ingredients. Like other all natural dog foods , Life's Abundance has no artificial flavoring or coloring, no dairy, no corn or corn gluten and no wheat or wheat gluten (two ingredients which are both difficult to digest and common for allergies in dogs).
Life's Abundance Ingredients
Most dog foods on the market use cheap imitations and fillers to reach the required quota of protein. Life's Abundance Dog Food is not one of these products. Some of the ingredients in Life's Abundance dog food include: chicken meal, eggs, chicken fat, whole grains (like brown rice and oat groats) , beets, broccoli, carrots, and blueberries to name just a few. Life's Abundance Dog Food also has a weight loss formula brand if that is what your dog needs.
Advantages of feeding your dog Life's Abundance dog food
Based on various reviews from a number of consumers who use Life's Abundance Dog Food, they attest to noticeably softer coats on their dogs, higher energy levels than witnessed previously, disappearance of allergies, and overall improved general health. With the poison scare (and pet food recall) that raced through the pet food world not long ago, many turned to Life's Abundance Dog Food specifically because they knew they could rely on their all natural ingredients. It was one of just a few dog foods on the market that were not on the recall list when it was discovered poison had been found in many other popular dog food brands.
Unlike commercial dog foods, Life's Abundance is not available at your local pet supply store or your veterinarian; it is delivered fresh right to your door. That in itself is just another reason to make it worth your while and serve Life's Abundance to your treasured pet.

The Best Premium Dry Dog Foods
If you are searching for information on Premium Dog Food, then you are already aware that diet is really important for your pet’s health and well being. You are actually trying to find the extra "something" that your canine friend will love and will be happy with.
There is a wide variety of dog food available in the market, ranging from the supermarket dog food to expensive organic and all natural dog food and some premium brands. It makes the selection of the best dog food difficult. Moreover, your pooch might just be fussy and ignore the dog food because it does not taste good, even though the label says it is good for the dog. This makes the decision for the best premium dog food even more difficult. It is tempting to just pick up an economy brand of dog food and throw in a bit of meat and try to feed the dog. Just consider this, most supermarket brands contain a lot of fillers, preservatives and not enough protein. Soon your dog could get ill and you will probably spend more on the repeated visits to the vet than what you have saved on buying cheaper dog food.
Like us human beings, dogs deal with stress, age deteriorates their bones and teeth, and dogs are subject to pollution. Unlike you, dogs get their meals from only one source, i.e. you. So your dog is practically dependent on you to fulfill his/her dietary requirements. Most dogs can not forage for food, and dog most certainly can not stop at a café for a sandwich. It is up to you, the owner, to ensure that your dog gets his complete holistic nutrition from the food you provide. This is why it is important to pick the best dog food, which may be premium natural dog food.
While experts may differ on what complete holistic nutrition for canines is, they all agree that premium dog foods are better for dogs than the supermarket brands. Premium dog food is nutritionally better, easy to digest and your dog will need less food daily. Another added bonus is that you will not have to scoop out your yard as often! Many dog owners and studies have shown that dogs living on premium dog foods have brighter eyes, silkier coats, and they are not subject to skin ailments. Studies have found out that dogs on premium dog food (also known as natural dog food, organic dog food, holistic dog food, etc) are less prone to ticks and fleas. Moreover premium dog foods smell better to dogs, and dogs have hyper-active olfactory senses. Dogs, especially the picky eaters, eat their premium chow with gusto as compared to regular dog food.
Premium dog food is available both as wet and dry dog food. Again experts differ on this too. While most experts state that dry food is better since it does not allow plaque to accumulate on the teeth, and the stools are firmer, others suggest that if you feed your dog only dry food, it will put a strain on the pet’s kidney. You would have to check with your vet, or observe your pet and make your own decision. ( it should be noted that crunchy foods help clean your dogs teeth)
List of Premium Dog Foods
Below is a list of some Premium Dog foods with a short description of each. We have also attached another link at the bottom to a previous post of the top 5 dry dog foods.Flint River Ranch Dog Food
This is a leading dog food brand, and is highly recommended. Their dog food is human grade (which means that humans can eat it too) and is very nutritious containing all the vitamins and nutrients that your dog needs. Some dogs will beg for food, even if they are not hungry because they have nutritional deficiencies. Feeding them Flint River Ranch Dog Food will ensure that they will be properly fed.Follow this link for our review of Flint River Ranch Dog food
Life’s Abundance Dog Food
Another all natural dog food, nutritionally enriched. It has a superior antioxidant formula and also gets the protein from 3 excellent sources ... egg, fish meal and chicken meal, and also has dried vegetables and fruits.
Pet Promise Dog Food
Made from free range organic chicken, it could be good but check with your vet since it has corn gluten, which definitely is not nutritious for dogs and brewers rice also has low nutritional value. Oat and barley are good nutritional sources for canines and the egg product is also rich in protein.
Solid Gold Dog Food
All Solid Gold foods are complete and balanced according to AAFCO guidelines. As per the Solid Gold website
Solid Gold dog food has been producing holistic, natural dog nutrition since 1974. Solid Gold has a line of nine dry dog foods, which includes their new high protein, low carbohydrate dry dog food, Barking at the Moon dog food. They also carry a line of canned dog as well as nutritional supplements, treats, and topical products such as skin creams for dog ailments.
Solid Gold specializes in the development of "low allergen" products, which work together to enhance total health in your dog, boost up your dogs immune system, and protect against disease. Solid Gold always uses wholesome USDA Choice meats, USDA grade I and II grains, and healthful monounsaturated and polyunsaturated oils.
It should be noted that many pet owners have switched from this brand due to a recent formula change.
